How Speed Tests Work
An internet speed test measures the rate at which data travels between your device and a test server. The test works in two phases:
Download test: The server sends a large file (typically 10 MB) to your browser. The test measures how many megabits of data arrive per second (Mbps). This reflects the speed at which you can load web pages, stream video, and download files.
Upload test: Your browser sends data (typically 5 MB) back to the server. The server measures how quickly it receives the data. Upload speed matters for video calls, cloud backups, uploading photos, and sending large email attachments.
Results are displayed in Mbps (megabits per second), the standard unit for measuring internet bandwidth. The test runs entirely in your browser โ no software installation required.
What Affects Internet Speed?
Many factors can influence your speed test results:
- Network congestion โ More users on your network or ISP means slower speeds, especially during peak hours.
- Wi-Fi vs. Ethernet โ Wired connections are faster and more consistent than Wi-Fi. Walls, distance, and interference degrade wireless signals.
- Router quality โ Older or budget routers may bottleneck your connection, even with a fast ISP plan.
- ISP throttling โ Some internet providers throttle bandwidth for certain traffic types or during heavy usage periods.
- Server distance โ The physical distance between your device and the test server adds latency and can reduce measured throughput.
- VPN overhead โ Using a VPN encrypts and reroutes your traffic, which typically reduces speed by 10โ30%.
- Background activity โ Other devices or apps using bandwidth (streaming, downloads, updates) will impact your test results.
For the most accurate results, close other browser tabs, pause downloads, and connect via Ethernet if possible.
Understanding Mbps vs MBps
One of the most common sources of confusion in internet speeds is the difference between Mbps and MBps:

There are 8 bits in 1 byte, so to convert: MBps = Mbps รท 8
For example, a 100 Mbps connection downloads files at approximately 12.5 MBps. If your ISP advertises 200 Mbps but your downloads show 25 MB/s, that's actually the correct speed โ the units are just different.
